The Effect of emotion-expression technique and cognitive-relaxation technique by anger expression

Abstract
This study was designed to examine the effects of emotion-expression technique and cognitive-relaxation technique for high school students with high level of anger. Thirty students with high level of state-anger were selected by self-report questionnaires in a preliminary examination. The half of students were anger expression group. And the others were anger suppression group. They were divided into two therapy groups and waiting list control group respectively. Two therapy groups participated in seven-session group therapy for three weeks. Emotion-expression technique consisted of talking, writing, printing, playing on musical instrument and acting. Cognitive-relaxation technique consisted of changing negative thinking into resonable statement, self-evaluation, relaxation training, breathing training, mental image training, relaxation training by memory and cue. The participants completed Buss Durkee Hostility Inventory(BDHI) and Beck Depression Inventory(BDI) on pre-test and post-test. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) and pairwise t-test were used to examine the treatment effect within each therapeutic condition. The results of this study are as follows. First, two therapy groups scored lower level of state anger. Second, the anger-expression group scored lower level of aggression after the emotion-expression training. The anger suppression group showed no change. Third, two therapy groups scored lower level of depression after emotion-expression training. These results indicated the significance of emotion-expression technique overlooked and indispensability of distinguishable therapy.
